1. Dry Trap Seal (Evaporated Water)
If a bathroom or guest washroom is rarely used, the water inside the floor trap U-bend will slowly evaporate. Without a liquid barrier, sewer gases rise directly up the drain. Flush the drain with water weekly to maintain the trap seal.
2. Decomposing Soap Scum and Hair
Shower drains collect hair, shower gel, and skin oils. This organic mixture settles in the trap basin, decaying and releasing odors. Cleaning the internal trap basket regularly prevents organic buildup.
3. Missing or Damaged Drain Cover Plugs
Many floor trap designs have a cleanout plug inside the basin. If this plug is loose, missing, or has a dry rubber seal, sewer gases will bypass the water trap and enter the room. Ensuring these plugs are tight is crucial.
